Skid Row revisited. 15 years ago my friends and I spent a year riding bikes through Skid Row, cameras in hand, capturing portraits of anyone willing to spend a few minutes with us. That experience forever altered my narrow perspective and perception of homelessness in America. These people were timid, guarded, friendly, and welcoming to a few absurdly naive, blindly ambitious photographers.

The situation there today is substantially worse. It is without a doubt unsafe to replicate my previous approach. The density of people combined with the overwhelming drug abuse creates far greater risks than 2011.

I have to acknowledge my late friend Chuc Nguyen, the best of our group, who introduced me to his world of street photography. Fearless in his approach, masterful in his execution, his inspiration continues to light this relentless path.
